Another look behind the curtain as we run around Michigan in an RV shooting photography for J. L. Powell book No. 4. This time we made it snow on Josh Powell.

    Josh,

I see we have numerous things in common…..not limited to fine gear, F1 and Susan and Burt. Love the new book, the color and the cover is fantastic(the product looks great as well). Keep up the great work and I hope business is good. Happy hunting!

    Dan

WOW! Very authentic plus you did it in MI. Congratulations to all involved. Good luck this fa’ & holiday season.

I am very impressed that the locations are in Michigan, but do not look like it. As a video production professional location is THE thing, and the photographer and staff definitely did their home work!
    Great shot!
    Ed

  4. Chris W. Says:

Which one is Josh? The guy modeling the clothes?

  5. Sam McGovern Says:

Just saw your catalog (book 4) and really like the look of the gear. Hope you don’t mind a few thoughts from someone who buys a lot of this kind/quality of stuff.

I greatly appreciate the ethic behind all this and think it will work well as a business. Do be careful with the narrative you are building in the catalog as it slips occasionally into the editorial style and sentiment of an old “cooper’s corner†article in guns & ammo. There’s a subset of the ‘guys who appreciate this kind of gear’ demographic that you are really trying to reach, namely ‘guys who will actually buy this kind of gear’.

    - ‘victoria’ sweater is a ridiculous choice of name for the cowichan/siwash type piece.

    - the models do a good job of mostly keeping out of the way, the coyote wrap photo should be completely rethought.

    - I hunt a lot but was seriously put off by the photo of the dead lion.

  6. Tim Says:

Not everybody would stay local for such a shoot, I admire that. I love our great state and am glad for every opportunity to show it off. Although, hopefully not too much, I’d hate for it to get crowded up here.

  7. Jack E. Says:

Question for Josh: I noticed again(!) in your latest catalog that all of the clothing is again modeled by a man(men) who doesn’t shave. When will your clothes be approved for those of us who do shave regularly? And who aren’t bearded? And will we ever see a man of color or an asian or a latino model your clothes?

  8. doug giles Says:

    great stuff guys.

note to sam: there’s nothing wrong with the ‘dead lion’ photo. it’s hunting. quit watching the lion king.

  9. Mark M Says:

Just received one of your catalogues…very tastefully done. As a former customer of Willis & Geiger I appreciated the homage. I also agree with Sam McGovern who earlier in the blog stream mentioned your narrative style. It is very apparent you have a strong committment to quality and want to see your garments handed down to future generations/wearers. Please don’t fall into the old J Peterman practice of rambling on about extraneous stuff that really doesn’t add anything to the purchasing decision. Lastly there is a strong contingent of us out there who are not afraid to express our individuality even when pursuing recreation and your merchandise fits the bill. Good Luck in 2009!

  10. Christian Says:

I too love the catalog! The bearded look is spot on…there are too many ‘naked’ faced men running around falling into the ‘metro-sexual’ trap! Don’t fear the beard…

The thought of passing on a coat to future generations, in my case, three sons, is worth chasing after. This line appears to be laden with ethos stepping beyond Filson and the predictable J. Peterman.

Ethos, according to The Oxford English Dictionary, is defined as “the characteristic spirit, prevalent tone of sentiment, of a people or community; the ‘genius’ of an institution or system.”

The fellow portrayed in the photos (Josh?) recalls a time of men who used to roam this country with frequency…it is time to bring them back.

If I had to sum up the vibe of the J. L. Powell line I would liken it to Elk carpaccio in the back country!

  11. Dennis P. McIntire Says:

Wonderful line of clothing. And a fine catalog to look through while sipping a Bushmills after a pheasant shoot.

Last year ordered one of your New Zealand wool turtlenecks (cream colored) Not ostentatious or flashy, yet stands out and draws attention by the fine texture and color of the fabric. In other words, a classic.
Haven’t seen any more of this style in your recent catalogs though. Why?

    Best, DPM
